We have all been born barefoot. A long time ago, people have lived and survived without using protective footwear. But, today, because of technology and the many changes it brought, wearing shoes became an essential part of life. But beyond all the protection and the style shoes provide, we seem to have forgotten the significant benefits and sense of freedom being barefoot brings.

Shoes were first invented thousands of years ago—way back when people used to live in caves. Back then, they used animal hides and leather laces to protect their feet from the rough terrain. Millennia passed and the concept of shoes evolved in countless ways from its design, material, and even its uses. It became a necessity to shod oneself. However, no matter how things change, most people still prefer to do a lot of things barefoot. It is all because being barefoot is very comfortable. But, aside from the unrivaled relaxation being barefoot brings, it also has a considerable number of benefits, not just to the feet, but the body as a whole.

Doing activities barefoot brings a lot of advantages to the body’s flexibility and mobility. It allows people to exercise, stretch, relax, and strengthen muscles they normally don’t get to use when wearing shoes. This is the reason why a lot of sports enthusiasts prefer to deal with their activities barefoot.

Numerous runners have been hitting the tracks without any shoes on because the benefits of running barefoot have long been supported by scientific research, coaches, and athletes who’ve offered ample evidence that training without shoes allows you to run faster and further with fewer injuries. Motion studies demonstrate that when running barefoot, one naturally lands on the forefoot, directly below the center of gravity. This results in optimum balance, increased stability, less impact, and greater propulsion.

Indeed, undertaking activities barefoot has a lot of benefits and advantages for the body. I went there last July 11 for my car's monthly double coating of wax while I had a late lunch at Charlie's Grind & Grill. When I came back to inspect the car after eating, there was this big, deep scratch mark on the driver's side rear quarter panel that went all the way down to the primer.

Ironically enough, the thickness of the scratch suggested that it was the rotary buffer's backing plate that caused it. Even the direction of the scratch is consistent with the left-to-right motion when one uses a rotary buffer on a car. I had the feeling the guy buffing my car wasn't that well-trained because while pulling the extension cord to buff the other side of my car, he left the rotary buffer on while pinning it under his armpit. Sure enough, his shirt got ripped in half after it got caught in the spinning buffer pad, leaving him with a couple of bruises on his arm and torso.

Anyway, when I pointed out the scratch to the supervisor, he called the guy who buffed my car who said that it had been there a long time. I pointed out to them that I practically see the entire length of the driver's side of my car everyday since that's the exposed side in our garage so I'm very familiar with even the faintest scratch on that side, even if the car was covered in a week's worth of dust. And as you can see, the size of the gash isn't that hard to miss.

In the end, they just shrugged their shoulders and walked away, leaving me around P5000+ poorer for the double wax coating and, for later that week, to retouch the scratched part.

Yes, the scratch went all the way down to the primer. Ouch!

I went to Big Bert's today and they've been very helpful in explaining to me the correct process on how to buff a car. And from what I've seen at 2onetwo (they use the same buffing pad for the two coats of wax!), Big Bert's is definitely waaaaaaay ahead of them when it comes to knowing how to do a job right.

I only patronized 2onetwo because I often eat at Charlie's but I've been meaning to switch to Big Bert's since I know the guys behind it. Well, 2onetwo just gave me the perfect - albeit expensive - reason to dump them and switch to a more professional, more experienced auto detailer. I mean, if Porsche owners trust Big Bert's to do a good job on their cars, then that means they (Big Bert's) know what they're doing when it comes to auto detailing. As for 2onetwo in Pasig, the many times I've been there, I just can't recall any high-end car getting a wash & wax there. I mean, if moneyed folks don't bring their cars there to get them detailed or at least given its monthly wash & wax, I guess that's an indicator that you can't really trust the shop's work. So yeah, that's a lesson learned right there.

The scratch is even longer than a magazine. And yet the guys at 2onetwo Pasig have the gall to say it's been there's a long time! I bet even Stevie Wonder can see that gash from a mile away!

Sure, 2onetwo, you've got lots of customers so you probably won't miss the roughly P900 I spend for your car wash and wax services every month. The thing is, by putting this out, I'm letting everyone else know the shoddy work of your people and how irresponsible they are to admit when they are at fault.

Good riddance, 2onetwo Pasig!

So, goodbye 2onetwo Auto Care Pasig. My not patronizing you anymore may be insignificant enough to not affect your sales you but I sure as hell will do my best to let everyone know the kind of service you have in store for your unlucky customers.

Landing in the Philippines soon - the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

“Automotive design is undoubtedly one of the supreme disciplines of industrial design. Almost no other product is as complex and combines so many different disciplines...” says Prof. Gorden Wagener, Mercedes-Benz Head of Design. This is evident in the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG (SLS AMG), wherein every inch and angle of the sports car is the result of the amalgamation of the skills of researchers, technical and engineering experts and designers of Mercedes-Benz-AMG.

Like all other Mercedes-Benz models, the SLS AMG combines performance, quality, comfort, safety and aesthetic appeal. Its dynamic and elegant visual design qualities do not compromise its performance as well as driver and passenger safety and comfort. There is a reason for every way the SLS AMG was designed.

The decision to use the “Gullwing” doors was not a gimmick to grab public attention. The doors hinged on the car roof were a purely structural requirement, since the lattice frame carried over from the racing SL did not allow the use of conventional front-hinged doors. The swing-wing doors, which open a full 70 degrees for the ease of access and egress, require less opening space than the conventional coupé doors, and can be fully opened in a normal garage.

The Typical Guy's Opinion: I had the opportunity to get up close and even sit inside an SLS AMG as I covered the Bangkok International Motor Show this year and I have to say, it's one awesome looking car.

Fil-Swiss Marlon Stockinger has Formula Renault UK dream weekend

Filipino-Swiss Formula Renault UK driver Marlon Stockinger had a dream weekend at rounds nine and 10 of the Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship at Croft Circuit last June 19 and 20 as he not only qualified in the top three for both rounds, he also took his maiden victory and finished in second place.

For round nine last June 19, Stockinger almost scored a hat trick as he not only took his maiden pole position for the race, he also held off the challenge of fastest lap holder and second place finisher Ollie Millroy for 15 laps to bag his very first Formula Renault UK win. This makes Stockinger the first ever Filipino driver to win a Formula Renault UK race.

On June 20 for the 10th Round, Stockinger qualified in third place for the race but after the starting lights went out, he immediately took second place after pole sitter Thomas Hylkema struggled to get away from the starting line. Stockinger then fended off the attack of eventual third place finisher Will Stevens as the 19-year old Filipino-Swiss driver brought his Atech Grand Prix car across the finish line in second place.

"It's been an excellent weekend for me and the team has done a great job in setting up the car. Round nine was really nerve-racking but I'm thrilled to finally secure a win especially given I've had a third place, a second place in the Winter Series and now my first win," said Stockinger in Formula Renault UK's official website. "This weekend has been a huge confidence boost for me though and I'm looking forward to the next rounds."

"What a fantastic result for Marlon, the whole team is delighted for him, he didn't put a wheel wrong all weekend and this was our most consistent performance this season," said Atech GP team principal David Hayle in their AtechGP.net website. "Now we must ensure we can nail qualifying for him as we head into the second half of the season as I have no doubt he is more than capable of challenging for race wins."

Stockinger's impressive weekend sees him moving up the Formula Renault UK leader board from ninth to seventh place this season. Stockinger's 136 points haul for the 2010 season is already more than double that of his 2009 season which he finished in 25th place with 56 points.

Side note: I was lucky to interview Marlon Stockinger for TopGear.com.ph and he's a genuinely nice guy. He's the Philippines' best hope of getting into F1, and being an F1 fan for as long as I can remember, I wish him all the luck in the world.

Chevrolet Cruzes tops both WTCC Manufacturer’s and Drivers’ Championships

Prepare your Suzuki APV Type II for rainy day driving

After suffering through an extremely hot El Niño summer, PAGASA is warning about the onset of the rainy season which is expected to peak in July and August, with at least 10 tropical cyclones entering the country between June and September.

Motoring advise columns list some basic precautions to prepare for rainy day driving, and one of the most basic is to check and replace the front and rear wiper blades of your Suzuki APV Type II. Old or brittle wiper blades may leave streaks on or even scratch your windshield, seriously limiting visibility during bad weather. Don’t wait for the rains to start, do a quick wiper check now by turning on your windshield washer and note any streaking, chattering or other obvious problems with your front and rear wipers. Furthermore, the Suzuki APV Type II is equipped with a rear windshield defogger, for improved visibility in extreme weather conditions.

Another basic precaution you can take is to check the condition of the tires on your Suzuki APV Type II. Check that the tire treads are deep enough for good traction. In addition, you will need a first aid kit including bandages, gauze, adhesive tape, antiseptic cream, instant hot and cold compresses, scissors and aspirin. With the Suzuki APV Type II’s spacious cabin, there is plenty of room to store your basic survival kit. However, make sure that you stick to the basic essentials and do not overload your vehicle.

Goodbye, Impreza WRX. It was fun while it lasted.

That's because Motor ImagePilipinas, the country’s exclusive distributor of Subaru vehicles, has decided to stop selling the WRX variant of the Impreza as the company has seen the demand for the Japanese carmaker’s mid-level performance variant pale in comparison to their top-of-the-line offering, the WRX STI.

This was revealed by Nicky Mariano, Motor Image Pilipinas’ general manager and the Motor Image Group’s chief operating officer for sales and marketing as he told The Typical Guy that they have decided to stop selling the WRX and concentrate instead on the R variant and the WRX STI.

According to Mariano, the local demand for the WRX isn’t as much as they’d like it to be as many of their buyers have chosen to either go with the entry-level R variant or the performance-oriented model, the WRX STI.

The Impreza WRX STI soldiers on...

“It’s not hard to see why many of our buyers went with the WRX STI instead of just the WRX,” Mariano said. “To them, the WRX STI gives them more value for their money because for around half a million pesos more, they get a car that’s faster and more powerful than the WRX.”

Motor Image Pilipinas’ marketing manager Ariel de Jesus seconded Mariano as he told The Typical Guy separately that “the market demand and trend is focused more on the WRX STI,” prompting the company to dump the WRX from their local line-up in favor of the WRX STI.

Priced at P2,448,000, the WRX STI has 300hp and 407Nm of torque while the WRX, when it was still being sold, cost P1,758,000 and produced 230hp and 320Nm of torque.

Now, the question is; if and when will Motor Image Pilipinas bring in the WRX STI sedan?

I believe I've neglected this blog long enough. A recent conversation with a friend and fellow Top Gear Philippines journalist Mikko David has inspired me to get back to blogging on a regular basis. After all, I've been blogging about cars even before I joined TopGear.com.ph, and if Yugatech's Abe Olandres can modestly say at a recent bloggers' conference that he'll be earning more than P2 million on ad placements alone this year, then who knows; maybe I could make half as much as that one day. Yeah, right.

I may be a motoring journalist, but before I came to be one, I am a car enthusiast that's eager to know a lot more about cars and share this knowledge with fellow enthusiasts. And I'm doing this to dispel the preconceived notion that motoring journalists are nothing more but the paid mouthpieces of car manufacturers and distributors.

In essence, I want this blog to become for cars and motorcycles - or maybe even for gadgets and places because, after all, the typical guy loves a lot of different stuff - what Anton Diaz' Our Awesome Planet did for food and travel - a one-stop shop for everything that a typical guy needs to know about.

Last January 21, 2010, consistent with its commitment to product safety and quality, Toyota Motor Sales USA initiated a Safety Campaign on sticking gas pedals of specific US market models, including certain 2009-2010 RAV4, certain 2009-2010 Corolla, certain 2007-2010 Camry, 2009 – 2010 Matrix, 2005 - 2010 Avalon, certain 2010 Highlander, 2007 - 2010Tundra, and 2008 - 2010 Sequoia, in coordination with the NHTSA*.

In rare instances, there is a possibility that certain accelerator pedals may mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position. Mitsubishi Motors Philippines banners 2009 industry sales with 33% growth

As total industry surpassed its 2009 forecast and registers 6% growth

The Philippine automotive industry defied threats of automotive slump due to global financial crisis as it registered a 6.4% growth in 2009. Total vehicle sales reached 132,444 units in 2009, exceeding the flat growth forecast for 2009 by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) and Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA) or 125,000 units. In 2008, total vehicles sold were 124,449 units.

CAMPI and TMA credits this growth to the aggressiveness of automotive players in introducing new models and various promotion schemes as well as by banks/financial institutions to accept auto financing from loans especially from entry level buyers such as small to medium scale entrepreneurs and also Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). In addition, the strong typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng last October which brought heavy floods in Metro Manila and Luzon areas caused irreparable damaged to most vehicles, have partially contributed to the increase as it accelerated vehicle replacements especially in the last quarter.

Meantime, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines (MMPC) closed 2009 with sales of 23,247 units, accounting for an impressive 32.5% growth compared to its 2008 sales of 17,539 units. With this sales performance, MMPC also managed to improve its market share from 14% in 2008 to 17.6% in 2009, to maintain its strong No.2 position in the industry.

MMPC also registered growth in all segments for the first quarter. Lancer and Galant sales totaled to 1,562 units for a slight 1% growth in the passenger car segment.

In the light commercial vehicle segment, total growth registered was 36% as MMPC sold a total of 20,959 light commercial vehicles versus 15,382 units sold in 2008. MMPC credits this performance to the strong sales of its new Montero Sport, Adventure, Strada pick ups and L300 models. Both Adventure and L300 models continue to attract private and government fleet, as well as small to medium scale entrepreneurs, and OFWs and their dependents. The Adventure and L300 continue to be significant due to their very low cost operation and maintenance and reliable performance of its now Euro-2 compliant 4D56 engine.

Meantime the warm market acceptance for the Montero Sport and Strada pick up were further validated by the various awards received last year. For the Montero Sport, it was voted as the best mid-size SUV and best value for money by motoring media in the Auto Focus People’s Choice Award and also the best mid-size 4x2 SUV in the 2009 Car Awards Group Inc. Likewise, the Strada was also voted as the best pick up in the Auto Focus People’s Choice Award.

In the truck and bus segment, MMPC sold a total of 726 units which has increased by 20% compared to 2008 due to improved fleet sales business.

Aside from its notable sales performance, MMPC also led the industry in customer satisfaction by topping both J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2009 Philippine Sales Satisfaction Index Study and Customer Service Index Study. In December 2009, MMPC also achieved its 500,000^th cumulative production milestone, being the first automotive manufacturer in the country to achieve this feat, as it rolled off its first locally assembled Lancer EX in its manufacturing plant situated in Cainta, Rizal. MMPC is confident in further increasing sales of its Lancer EX given the sustained availability from its local production at the same time repositioning the price at very competitive levels. The Lancer EX was initially introduced by MMPC in 2008 as a completely built up unit from

Japan

and received commendations from several local motoring media including the Car Awards group which proclaimed it as the best Compact Sedan for 2009.

For 2010, MMPC remains to be very optimistic as it aims to further increase sales volume and market share. “Our objective for this year is to sell 28,000 or a 20% growth from our 2009 performance”, Froilan Dytianquin, Assistant Vice President for Marketing Services remarked. “Our positive growth projections will be supported by our refreshed vehicle line up such as the 2010 models of the Lancer EX, Montero Sport, Strada and Adventure. There will be also new exciting additions this year such as the Lancer EX Ralliart, a new compact cross over plus new variants of our core models. Apart from realizing this sales target, MMPC will also continue to improve further its after sales to ensure the total satisfaction of our customers”, Dytianquin added.

Motolite at forefront of Philippine solar car project; supports SIKAT development for 2011 world challenge

Motolite, the country’s leading automotive battery brand and a strong supporter of alternative energies, has strengthened its commitment to the Philippine solar car project with its continued support for SIKAT, the country’s second foray in the World Solar Challenge. SIKAT is currently being developed by a student team from the De La Salle University (DLSU), to compete in the 11^th World Solar Challenge set for 2011 in Australia.

The World Solar Challenge is an extreme endurance race, requiring solar-powered cars to travel 3,010-kilometers across the Australian Outback from Darwin to Adelaide. First run in 1987, the race attracts teams from across the globe.

SIKAT is the successor to SINAG, the country’s first solar car, which was conceptualized and developed by DLSU engineering students, and entered as the Philippine entry in the 9th World Solar Car Competition in 2007. SINAG successfully completed the grueling cross-country route and finished 12^th in a field of 41 solar cars from different countries worldwide.

According to Ramon Agustines, chairman of the Philippine Solar Car Society (PSCS) and president of Motolite, “We believe solar energy can be the fuel of choice for transportation in the future, especially in the Philippines where solar energy is so abundant. This year, we hope to build awareness of the benefits of solar technology and our country’s potential to play a leading role in this field.”

To promote increased awareness of the benefits of solar energy among Filipinos, SIKAT was publicly launched last December 16, 2009, at the SM Mall of Asia in Manila. This is the first of a series of provincial road shows that will bring SIKAT and solar energy closer to the general public.

Recognizing the changing social circumstances surrounding its global operations, Suzuki Motor Corporation has issued a global environmental charter that clearly outlines its corporate policy to pass on to the next generation a clean environment and bountiful society. Aside from observing environmental laws, Suzuki has also taken the initiative of reducing the pressure placed on the environment by developing eco-friendly vehicles for the global market.

In all its product development efforts, Suzuki engineers are mandated to focus on: (1) improving fuel efficiency; (2) reducing exhaust emissions; (3) promoting the 3Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle; (4) managing and reducing materials with environmental impact; and (5) noise reduction.

Suzuki automobiles have earned a well-deserved reputation for fuel-efficient performance. These have been achieved through engine design, use of continuously variable transmission (CVT), reduced vehicle weight, and better aerodynamics. A new mini-vehicle launched abroad, the Suzuki Cervo SR was introduced with a direct injection intercooler turbo engine and a 7-speed CVT. This achieved emissions 75% lower than 2005 emission standards, the only mini turbo vehicle compatible with the green taxation plan. For its motorcycle models, Suzuki is starting to switch to electronically controlled fuel injection systems to optimize fuel management and reduce emissions for some models launched abroad.

To reduce vehicle weight, Suzuki R&D engineers have improved manufacturing methods to strengthen and reinforce body parts while controlling weight. High-tensile steel is used extensively in all Suzuki vehicles for lighter vehicles with better collision energy absorption. Alternator loads have been reduced to minimize electric power consumption for lamps and other electric components. Suzuki vehicles are also starting to incorporate fuel consumption indicators in their instrument panels to encourage drivers to implement fuel-efficient driving.

For its recycling efforts, Suzuki has succeeded in recycling used glass from end-of-life vehicles, considered a difficult challenge for many automotive manufacturers. This is in addition to extensive application of recyclable resin parts. Suzuki designers are also working to reduce or eliminate environmental impact materials such as lead, mercury, hexavelent chromium, and cadmium in Suzuki vehicles.

Another area that Suzuki is working on is in reducing traffic noise produced by vehicles, particularly those produced by the engine, transmission, intake and exhaust systems, etc. Suzuki vehicles are designed with sound insulation covers to prevent noise leakage.

Philippine-built Mazda3 scores another win in Thailand Quality Tests

For the third consecutive year, Philippine-built Mazda3 won the Thailand Initial Quality Study (IQS) in the mid-size car segment. This is according to a J.D. Power Asia Pacific Report which released the J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2009 Thailand Initial Quality Study.

The study, which measures problems customers experience with their new vehicle during the first two to six months of ownership, examines more than 200 problem symptoms covering eight categories. These categories, listed in order of frequency of reported problems, include: vehicle exterior; engine and transmission; driving experience; HVAC; audio, entertainment and navigation; features, controls and displays; vehicle interior; and seats.

Overall quality performance is determined by the problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality.

The Mazda3 (137 PP100) ranks highest in the midsize car segment for the third consecutive year, besting top Japanese competitors.

“The Thailand IQS result further strengthens Mazda3's reputation as a globally multi-awarded compact sedan. More importantly, it validates the strength of our Philippine manufacturing operations and our quality process, which have been producing the Mazda3 in our Sta. Rosa, Laguna plant. It is also a testament to the world-class craftsmanship and dedication of Ford Motor Company Philippines' Filipino workforce which enabled these vehicles to earn such citations,” said Steven Tan, VP for Marketing & Sales, Mazda Philippines.

The 2009 Thailand IQS Study is based on evaluations from 3,460 owners who purchased their new vehicle between October 2008 and July 2009. Contestants from all over the country will, once again, go head to head in a contest of scale modeling excellence. The nation’s very best in the categories of aircraft, armor, ships, automobiles, figures, dioramas and science-fiction will be decided in this week long event.

The new Mitsubishi Galant SE is equipped with a fully functional Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) Navigation system which is first in its class. The dealer option GPS Navigation system complements the Galant multi-information and entertainment function. Drifting is... WAY COOL!!!

I've already blogged about this in my personal blog but for the benefit of those who have no idea what I do for a living, well, I make a living as a staff writer for Top Gear (Digital), the website of the country's BEST automotive magazine!

I LOOOOVVVVEEEE the BBC program, even the post-Jeremy Clarkson, pre-revamp shows since Tiff Needell's powerslides were entertaining enough (I even believe Tiff just might be The Stig, but that's another blog story) so when the chance came for me to be a writer under the Top Gear brand - even if it's just for the website of the locally-licensed version - I just had to jump in, leaving behind the generous salary I was earning then to make a living as an impoverished motoring hack.

Now, one of the perks of my job is going to cool motoring events that the general public isn't privy to. I've attended the launch of brand new cars from various manufacturers, I've gone to press events that introduced newfangled gadgets for cars, I've gone to government-sponsored motoring-related events, I've even attended award shows for the country's top motorsport drivers. But the one thing that still brings a smile to my face is when I remember the day the entire Top Gear team went drifting.

Yes, courtesy of JP Tuason and his Tuason Racing School, we were taught the basics of drifting, Initial D-style. And lemme tell you, IT IS HAAARRRDDD! To sum it up, it's just like what Yoda said to Luke, 'you must unlearn what you have learned.' And that basically means you have to throw away everything that you've learned about driving a car and do the exact opposite of all that! And if you think you being able to drift means you're already the shit, try riding shotgun while a REAL drift racer takes you out for some nasty powerslides!

Although it seems drifting's a smooth thing on video, when I was filming that, I was being thrown left and right inside the truck! So thank God for the helmet, the five-point harness, and the racing seat!

Next week, it's the Manila International Auto Show, and that only means cars AND booth babes! And since Top Gear will have a booth there, expect this Typical Guy to do a complete coverage on both! After all, I'm just doing my job!

Even during the time back in high school when I played b-ball a lot, I never did become a big fan of high-top kicks. But still, my love for low-top sneakers didn't stop me from buying high-top kicks that were either awesome in looks or were bound to be future collectibles - that is, if they were in my budget range.

And so, after buying my last pair of high-top kicks in late 2004 in the form of adidas' white/blackT-Mac 4, the first shoe in adidas' line-up to feature their revolutionary - and patented - HUG system...

... it looks like the next pair of high-top kicks I'll be getting would be Nike's Air Max Bizness Manny Pacquiao PE (Player Exclusive).

The Pac-Man's signature kicks carries the country's national colors, with a white leather upper, blue patent leather on the toebox and the heel, and red accents on the inner lining and the swoosh's border.

A great design highlight on the shoe is the lasered rendition of the Philippine eagle from the Pac-Man's Nike-sponsored, Mike Friolo-designed crest. I have other Nike kicks with laser-rendered designs, the most prominent in my collection being my now-broken-down white/sky blue and now-hardly-used black/white pairs of Nike's Zoom LeBron II Lows.

I'm back on the dayshift, although the actual time has changed since I'll be reporting for work AT NOON instead of the usual morning shift. And I gotta tell you, commuting in midday traffic is HELL!

Still, I'm pretty happy to be back working during the daytime as opposed to working the graveyard shift. I'm wide awake AND I can do a lot more since there's less distraction around me so expect me to be posting my regular blog updates within a couple of weeks. After all, I've got a lot of geeky and manly stuff to talk about.

But first, I have to finish the latest F1 primer I'm doing for Top Gear Philippines which should be published in the March 2009 issue.

Unfortunately, work has gotten in the way of my blogging activities since my shift was changed with nary a warning, from the regular dayshift to the godforsaken graveyard shift I've managed to avoid for the past year and a half.

Supposedly, this is only going to be a temporary thing as our office makes the transition from leaving our Makati office to working in our new Ortigas office permanently, so hopefully, I'll be back to my regular everyday posting self within the next couple of weeks.

And before I forget, I was just accepted by Gear Patrol as one of their newest (and, as far as I know, the ONLY Philippine AND Asian-based) contributors so hopefully, that'll open up more doors for me.

The Typical Guy's 2008 Brazilian GP Review...

Yesterday's Brazilian GP was a race that could've easily been written by the best Hollywood script writers, keeping the audience at the very edge of their seats all throughout the race, with the climactic conclusion coming at the very last corner of the very last lap.

For Ferrari's Felipe Massa, at the end of the race, everything he did to win it didn't really matter. On the final corner, with McLaren's Lewis Hamilton running sixth and the title seemingly in Massa's grasp thanks to his winning the race, Toyota's gamble to keep the fourth-place Timo Glock on the wet track on intermediate tires lucked out, giving Hamilton the very break he needed to claim the championship for himself.

Cruel luck for Massa to come so close to winning the championship on his home soil and yet be denied it. But that's racing. And at least this time, the stewards stayed clear of the championship - but that's not to say their lack of action didn't make a mess of things elsewhere.

Right before the race started, a slight rain shower soaked the track enough to prompt race officials to start the event 10 minutes late, giving the teams enough time to change their tires if they wanted to. And with the immediate weather forecast saying that the skies would be clear for at least 30 minutes, almost all the teams chose to run with intermediate tires save for BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica who stayed with his slicks, only to dive into the pit lane after the formation lap to change to intermediates.

After the delay and with the race finally scheduled to start, when the green lights went out, everyone got off cleanly with Massa leading the pack as McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen on P5 quickly overshot Hamilton but was quick to accede the position back to his teammate. Going into the tight Turn 2, Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel, who jumped ahead of Renault's Fernando Alonso, tussled with Kovalainen, a bold yet reckless move since a collision would've proved catastrophic since the rest of the field was still behind them.

Fortunately enough, or unfortunately for Red Bull's David Coulthard, the crash happened further back as WilliamsF1's Nico Rosberg drove into the back of Coulthard, ending the retiring Scot's last race without having even completed a single lap, while Coulthard's RB4 collected WilliamsF1's Kazuki Nakajima as Renault's Nelson Piquet Jr. spun out on Turn 2. Thanks to this carnage, the Safety Car was released for three laps with Massa in the lead, followed by Toyota's Jarno Trulli, Ferrari's Kimi Räikkönen, Hamilton, Vettel, Alonso, Kovalainen, Toro Rosso's Sebastien Bourdais, Glock, and Red Bull's Mark Webber.

With the track quickly drying, it only became a question of when the front-runners would come in for their slick tires. Soon thereafter, Glock was first in on Lap 9 with the rest following into the pits for their own slicks the next three laps thereafter.

And while all that Massa needed to do was to keep his cool and stay in front of everybody, Hamilton, down at seventh after his pit stop, had to fight for positions to keep his championship hopes alive. So on Lap 12, Lewis overtook Trulli for sixth and was soon chasing after a surprisingly fifth-place Giancarlo Fisichella in Force India's VJM-01. On Lap 17, Hamilton made a bold move by passing Fisichella on a wet line to take fifth place. All he had to do then was keep the position 'til the end of the race and the championship would be his even if Massa won the race. But it was still early in the race, anything could still happen for both contenders.

With the many pit stops that followed thereafter, if Massa wasn't on P1, he was on P2 whereas with Hamilton, he was always fighting for position; if he wasn't on fourth, he would be on either fifth or sixth, his championship dream hanging in the balance.

But on Lap 64, the rain began to fall once more, forcing almost everyone to switch back to intermediates except for Glock who chose to stay out on slicks. Unfortunately for Hamilton, the tire change didn't seem to do him any good as his lap times didn't increase. And worse, Vettel was constantly pushing him. Glock, meanwhile, seemed to have made the right choice as the rain didn't seem to be heavy enough for the need to change to intermediates after all.

So on Lap 69, with just two more laps to go, it was Massa followed by Alonso, Räikkönen, Glock, Vettel and Hamilton.

And then, in an unexpected and inexplicable move that should've necessitated the steward's intervention, the 11th-place Kubica, who was a lap behind the front-runners, chose to unlap himself by overtaking both Vettel and Hamilton in one bold yet stupid move. Hamilton, spooked with Kubica's sudden appearance by him and with his tires losing traction, ran wide, giving Vettel the opportunity to pass Hamilton and claim fifth-place for himself, tipping the championship into Massa's favor.

Tried as he could, Hamilton couldn't match Vettel's place, his championship dream seemingly coming to an end. But on the last corner, with Glock's move to stay on slicks going against the wet weather, Hamilton finally got the fifth-place he needed to claim the driver's championship for himself.

As for Massa, after a brief moment of triumph believing he won the race and the driver's title, when relayed of the news that Hamilton was able to finish in fifth, one can only imagine the heartbreaking emotion he felt after giving it his all throughout the race. After all, to claim the pole position, win the race AND set the fastest lap, his hat trick clearly wasn't enough as his championship dream still relied on Hamilton encountering an unlucky break. So on the podium, after winning the race, there has never been a more dour face on the top step of the podium ever as Massa's.

As for Hamilton, the Brazilian gods of misfortune he had last year chose to give him a nail biting experience this time around to finally win the driver's championship.

Both drivers truly deserved to be the champion. Although Massa was a race ahead of Hamilton in terms of wins (true, it should be Hamilton who's a race ahead if not for the Belgian GP debacle) consistency is always the key, and that's the one thing Massa needs to work on. Michael Schumacher won his many titles by displaying some of the most precision drives ever, and if Massa could come close to that and avoid making the costly mistakes he's sometimes known for, then he just could be Ferrari's next champion.

But not to take away from Hamilton's win, beside the fact that the race stewards played a great part in his having to win the championship so close down the line, the narrow margin of how he won the title only proves he still has a long way to go. After all, Kimi won his title with 110 points, Schumacher won his seventh-and-last world title with 148 while Alonso got his second title with 134. But then again, this season has turned to be more than a two-horse race with Renault scoring two wins and BMW Sauber and Toro Rosso winning one apiece so Hamilton's less-than-100-point win could be overlooked.

In the end, with the stewards being conspicuously absent for the race, the F1 fans finally got what they deserved; an honest-to-goodness race with all the drama and suspense on track and not off it. And F1 is all the much better for that.

Hamilton or Massa?

Much like last year, this last race of the 2008 F1 season sees McLaren's Lewis Hamilton entering the race with a 7-point lead over his championship rival in the rosso corsa car of Ferrari; but only this time, it'll be Felipe Massa he'll be racing against for the championship, and not Kimi Räikkönen.

In last year's Brazilian Grand Prix, when practically everyone was proclaiming Lewis Hamilton to be the next driver's champion owing to the aforementioned 7-point lead over Kimi Räikkönen and the fact that he was on P2 on the starting grid, Kimi proved everyone wrong by winning the race to claim the championship for himself. But then again, that only happened because Hamilton "sabotaged" his own race; first, because he was slow in getting off the starting line, and second, because his gearbox malfunctioned, effectively slowing him down for 30 seconds - just enough time for most of the cars on the grid to pass him. Relegated to 18th and needing to finish in fifth to claim the championship, poor Lewis could only manage to salvage a seventh-place finish, thereby giving Kimi the title.

But this season, with a year's experience under his belt and his heartbreaking championship loss a reminder of what he could've been as F1's very first rookie champion, Hamilton has taken on a more relaxed air, saying that missing out on this year's championship won't be a disaster. Hard to believe when so many expect so much of him, to be so close to winning it all yet finding yourself to be the bridesmaid and not the bride for two years in a row is unthinkable.

As for Felipe Massa, the pressure has never been greater as the Brazilian seeks to claim the championship in the very last race of the season which also happens to be his home race. After Ayrton Senna's untimely death in the 1994 San Marino GP, no other Brazilian driver has come this close to winning the championship. And surely, the chance to win it all and celebrate his triumph in front of his countrymen is a great incentive for Massa. But that's a double-edged sword as, surely, the idea of failing to seal the win in his home race lurks at the back of his mind.

Fortunately for Massa, sitting on pole gives him an added advantage as separating him from Hamilton's MP4-23 is Toyota's Jarno Trulli and, most importantly, his teammate, Räikkönen. And as everyone who's been watching F1 for some time knows, issuing team orders is not an unfamiliar concept in Ferrari, so to see Räikkönen acting as a buffer for Massa against Hamilton won't be a surprising sight. And since they'll both be fighting for position, some fireworks between the two are to be expected. After all, Kimi's notoriously fast while Hamilton has proven to be great in overtaking his competitors.

Driving for Ferrari, Massa's races in Brazil has been exceptionally well, with a win in 2006 and second-place finishes in the following years after. But then again, with a wet Brazilian GP being forecasted, and with the wet weather being Massa's Waterloo, Hamilton just might win it all. After all, he's not being called F1's newest Rain Master after Michael Schumacher for nothing, and his masterful display of control in this year's British GP is proof enough of that.

Still, in a race where there's so much on the line, the fireworks - or the lack of it, for that matter - that we all have to be looking out for would be the ones coming from the stewards. They've been in the middle of so many controversial decisions this season, to see them hand out another questionable and unpopular decision that would meddle in the championship standings is the last thing F1 needs.

But who knows? In the end, Massa just might rip out the fueling rig again or Hamilton might trip up his transmission to cost either one the championship.

But all I really want is a good, clean race. And if the race is going to be decided by the stewards, I just hope that, for once, they DO make the right decision. After all, in the end, after all has been said and done, it's the fans who should be the winners.

...it's NBA Basketball!!!

And yesterday, the 2009 NBA season started with a bang! And what were the first NBA-related items that I read on the 'net? No, it wasn't how the LA Lakers beat the Portland Trailblazers, 96-76, or how Greg Oden, the #1 draft choice of the 'Blazers in 2007 who went on to spend his entire rookie year recovering from a microfracture knee surgery, injured his foot in the first quarter of his very first regular-season NBA game, which means he'll be riding the bench for 2 to 4 more weeks!

Now, can somebody please put him out of his - and the team's - misery? Oden is just wasting the team's time AND money every single time he misses a game. But I digress...

Okay, so what were the first NBA-related items that I read on the 'net? Well, I already blogged about how David Beckham was seen checking out the Lakers' cheerleaders who, without a doubt, have more meat in any single one of them when compared to Mrs. Beckham, the former "Posh Spice," so that's not it.

Well, one item that piqued my interest is that, although authorities have declined to confirm it, ex-New York Knicks coach and former NBA star Isiah Thomas apparently overdosed on sleeping pills last week. That's right, the same Isiah Thomas who led the then-Bad Boys of Basketball, the Detroit Pistons, to two straight NBA championships and who recently coached the Knicks to two dreadful losing seasons AND was charged with a sexual harassment suit, overdosed on some sleeping pills.

"Lookit me, goddammit! I didn't take no damn sleeping pills!"

But that's not the worst part of it because what really bothers me is how Isiah denied that report by saying that it was his 17-year old daughter who required treatment, prompting Harrison Police Chief David Hall to say that, "As parents, you try to protect your kids; you don't say they did something when it was you who did it. We know the difference between a 47-year-old man and a teenager."

For shame, Isiah. For shame.

...or, at the very least, a member of the Saudi Arabian royal family. Because for a world that's totally dependent on petroleum products, if the country that your family rules is the world's leading exporter of the said product, then not only can you buy a gas guzzling, non-environment friendly vehicle like the soon-to-be-released Kahn Cosworth 300, you can buy an entire fleet of it!

And we're not talking about 5 or 10 or even 20 cars, we're talking about 80 UNITS of a single model alone! That's right, because according to one report, the royal family of Saudi Arabia placed an order for 80 units of a specialized and highly customized SUV that isn't even available yet! Why? Because according to the spokesman for the royal family, since the Kahn Cosworth 300 will be the first road "car" to wear the prestigious Cosworth badge in more than a decade, they "wanted the cars before anybody else."

The Kahn Cosworth 300 is essentially, a Range Rover Sport that has seen some extensive modifications both inside and out, courtesy of Kahn Design for both the exterior and interior refinements and Cosworth for the engine tuning package. Set to be launched in a couple of days at the MPH Show in London on October 30, that the Kahn Cosworth 300 is far removed from its Range Rover Sport donor platform is simply an understatement.

Kahn Design's styling package features a road-hugging body kit, with a low-riding front spoiler, flared arches, side skirts, rear valance with a diffuser-like design to it, and and a large rear spoiler. Capping off the aggressive look are 22-inch lightweight alloy Cosworth platinum-finish wheels riding on low-profile tires. As for Cosworth's famed engine tuning works, they managed to bump up the power from the Range Rover Sport's turbodiesel V8 powerplant from 268BHP to 300BHP, capable enough to accelerate the nearly 3-ton vehicle from 0-100KPH in under 8 seconds before attaining a top speed of almost 220KPH.

And how much is this going to cost the Saudi Arabian royal family? Well, based on our current exchange rate, with a Kahn Cosworth 300 commanding 75,000GBP, that's a little over PHP5.9 million! Multiply that by 80 and that's PHP 472 million! That's almost half a billion already! And that's without the tax figures yet! So, yes, it's good to be the King.

Technically, it was delivered by a courier but you know what I mean. Anyway, it's a package from Clear Shampoo. And apparently, it's a freebie for the early registrants to the bloggers' Halloween party Clear will be sponsoring on October 31.

Included inside was an invitation to the party along with a data CD that contained ad stills and videos of their latest spokesperson, the Pussycat Dolls' Nicole Scherzinger as well as an FAQ about the product.

There also was a flyer promoting a contest that a blogger could win an iPod Touch. Would it be too much to wish that I win that one? Too bad, though, that the URL they gave in the flyer hasn't been updated SINCE MID-SEPTEMBER! Premature press release from Unilever, I would think, or someone from either SM's marketing or IT department has totally forgotten they actually have an SM Hypermarket Blogspot page.

...The Typical Guy's 2008 NFL Week 8 Review!

In East Rutherford, New Jersey, Brett Favre once more displayed his do-or-die gunslingin' ways by pulling out a win for the New York Jets (4-3) against the Kansas City Chiefs (1-6), 28-24. Favre struggled throughout the game where he threw three interceptions, with one even being returned for a touchdown. But in the end, with just a minute left in the game, Favre connected with Laveranues Coles for a 15-yard touchdown pass in front of the end zone.

In Foxborough, Massachusetts, even with three sidelined running backs, the New England Patriots (5-2) still rallied to eke out a win against the St. Louis Rams (2-5), 23-16, as Kevin Faulk took on a bigger role in the Pats' running game. Faulk led the Patriots with 60 yards on 13 carries and added four receptions for 47 yards while Matt Cassel was 21-for-33 for a career-high 267 yards.

In Charlotte, North Carolina, it was a reunion of sorts as two former NFL Europe teammates with the Amsterdam Admirals, Arizona Cardinals' Kurt Warner and Carolina Panthers' Jake Delhomme, faced off against each other. And though Warner mostly had his way against a defense that entered the game ranked second against the pass, the Panthers (6-2) pulled off a stunning 27-23 comeback victory against Arizona (4-3), owners of one of the more potent offenses in the NFL.

In London - and yes, I do mean THAT London, as in London, England - the New Orleans Saints (4-4) beat the sagging San Diego Chargers (3-5), 37-32, as quarterback Philip Rivers' last-second Hail Mary pass into the end zone was knocked down by the Saints' swarming defense. The Saints' quarterback, Drew Brees, passed for 339 yards and three TDs, and is still on pace to break Dan Marino's single-season record for passing yards (5,084). Ironically enough, the game was the first time he faced his former team since he was San Diego's signal caller from 2001-2005. The Chargers, though, did get a big game from LaDainian Tomlinson, as he shrugged off a recent toe injury to rush for 105 yards on 19 carries and catch a touchdown pass.

And in Nashville, the Tennessee Titans remained as the NFL's lone unbeaten team (7-0) as their defensive grit and patient offense thumped the Indianapolis Colts (3-4), 31-21, hurting their chance to enter the playoffs even further, with the win being sealed right after the Colts' Peyton Manning's second of two interceptions.

So far, pre-season favorites, the San Diego Chargers and the Indianapolis Colts, have really been struggling to pick up their game. And while some will reason that Peyton Manning's off-season surgery and not having played in the pre-season tune-up games as significant reasons on why he hasn't been as sharp as usual, that's still unacceptable. He' still lobbing passes to the same people he's been playing with for years so it can't be a matter of the timing of his throw. Still, I'll let him slide on that one since an injury is an injury. But as for the Chargers, who knows what their problems are? Sure, Shawne Merriman is out for the season but that doesn't explain why a team with such a highly rated offense AND defense is down 3-5.

Jeff Garcia is arguably the NFL player with the hottest wife in the entire league in the person of 2004 Playboy Playmate of the Year, Carmella DeCesare. And not content with having a really hot wife, he also played a really hot game that resembled the Pro Bowl Jeff Garcia of old as he completed 26 of 37 passes for 310 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Bryant on Tampa Bay's opening drive, to beat the struggling Seattle Seahawks 20-10, enough reason for coach Jon Gruden to retain Garcia as the Bucs starting quarterback in place of the still-recuperating Brian Griese.

In St. Louis, Tony Romo not only showed he was a wuss, he also showed the Dallas Cowboys' faithful fans that he was a dick, giving them a sense of false hope as he showed up in uniform with his right pinkie wrapped in bandages, only to tell the coaching staff after the pre-game warm-ups that he didn't feel like playing after all, leaving the Cowboys to play the game with 40-year old backup quarterback, Brad Johnson. Unfortunately, Johnson couldn't keep up with a suddenly potent and opportunistic Rams' offense, throwing three interceptions and only one touchdown in a 34-14 loss to the Rams.

In Green Bay, the Packers' aggressiveness on both their defense and offense won their game over the Indianapolis Colts, 34-14, as Aaron Rodgers completed 21-of-28 passes for a 186-yard, 104.2-rated performance that did not include any turnovers or sacks while his counterpart, Peyton Manning, the man with the laser rocket arm, finished 21-for-42 for 229 yards with two interceptions. With the loss, the Colts are now 3-3, the worst start to a season for Indianapolis since 2001 - the last time the Colts didn't make the playoffs.

In Orchard Park, New York, the power was out at Ralph Wilson Stadium and the play clock wasn't working. That could have been a sign of things to come as the team with a lightning bolt as the team's logo, the San Diego Chargers, was outplayed by the Buffalo Bills who are now 5-1 and have matched the franchise's best start since 1995. Down at 3-4, the Chargers certainly don't look like a team with aspirations of getting into the Super Bowl now, a far cry from the team that went into the AFC Championship game a year ago, with quarterback Philip Rivers committing three turnovers, including two fumbles, which directly resulted in the Bills scoring 10 points, and with LaDainian Tomlinson a non-factor, with only 41 rushing yards.

In Foxborough, Massachusetts, the New England Patriots dominated the game against the Denver Broncos as if the their star quarterback, Tom Brady, miraculously recovered from his season-ending knee injury, though it was really back-up quarterback Matt Cassel who orchestrated the offense as he threw three touchdown passes, with Randy Moss catching two as the Pats routed Denver 41-7. Cassel finished 18-for-24 for 185 yards though he was sacked six times while his counterpart in Denver, Jay Cutler, was 17-for-26 for 168 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

All in all, it was a week that pretty much sucked for the teams - and quarterbacks - I'm keeping a close eye on.

The Typical Guy's 2008 Chinese GP Review...

For Lewis Hamilton, only one word can describe his run in yesterday's Chinese Grand Prix: Perfect. After all, the man achieved a perfect triple as he not only nailed the pole position and finished the race in first place, he also set the fastest lap in the entire race. And with the way he made a mess of his chances in the first corner of the Japanese Grand Prix, this time around, he didn't put a wrong foot down.

Hamilton got off cleanly at the start of the race and took the first corner unchallenged, with the Ferrari's of Kimi Räikkönen and Felipe Massa quickly slotting in behind him. But that's not to say there weren't any first corner shenanigans happening as Toyota's Jarno Trulli and Toro Rosso's Sebastien Bourdais collided going into the corner, sending both cars spinning off the tarmace. A simple race incident , really, but not to Trulli who was quick to blame Bourdais, since the incident caused Trulli to pit in for a new nosecone, only to retire a lap later since his damaged sidepod affected the car's aerodynamics. But the way I see it, Trulli really didn't leave Bourdais enough room going into the corner, so with nowhere to go, a collision between them was likely to happen.

As for Hamilton, he quickly hammered out a series of fastest laps - something he hasn't particularly been good at since, prior to this race, he only set the fastest lap in two other GP races - as he built a gap from the Flying Finn who, surprisingly, was able to get on the pace early on in the race after so many previous races where he only found his pace at the latter part of a grand prix. Massa, meanwhile, was stuck behind Räikkönen and seemed as if he couldn't get past him. He could've been running on a heavy fuel load but that was quickly dispelled as he, together with Renault's Fernando Alonso dove into the pit lane at Lap 14, with Hamilton and Räikkönen following a lap later, leaving Hamilton's team mate, Heikki Kovalainen to take the lead momentarily.

And of course, when it was Heikki's turn to slide into the pit, it was situation normal once more as Hamilton again took the lead at Lap 19 with Räikkönen following close behind almost all the way 'til the end of the race. Massa, though at third place, was over 15 seconds behind his championship rival so it was not surprising then that with just six more laps to go in the 56-lap race, Räikkönen backed off from chasing Hamilton, thus allowing Massa to take second place with Räikkönen at third. Can someone say 'team orders at work'? At least this time around, it wasn't so blatantly obvious compared to those Ferrari did before during Jean Todt's time as team principal.

Still, as spectacular a drive McLaren and Hamilton had, Massa is still within striking distance to win the drivers' championship title for himself as the final race of the season goes to Brazil, Massa's home race. What McLaren has to remember is that not too long ago, Hamilton lost last year's championship due to a faulty gearbox, not to mention that Heikki's past two races have been spoiled by something in his car not working right, so fate can still play its games against McLaren. However, the pressure is on Massa because what he needs to do is to finish in either first or second place to win the championship. Hamilton, meanwhile, has the luxury to finish at fifth or better to win his first world title but if he only finishes at sixth, with both drivers tied for points, Massa will have one more race win than Hamilton, giving Massa the championship in his home race. A true fairy tale ending, there.

And should Massa finish second, Hamilton needs to come home in seventh place to take the title as then he'll have one point more than Massa. But if he finishes eighth and ties with Massa for points, the Ferrari driver could win the championship by virtue of more second place finishes.

But, if Massa can only manage third place, it doesn't matter then on what position Hamilton will finish as the title will unquestionably be his.

Leah Dizon is married AND pregnant?! WTF?!?

According to numerous reports, on the last stop of her nationwide tour in Japan, Asian-American gravure/J-pop idol Leah Dizon has admitted that she had gotten married over the weekend to a 29-year old Japanese stylist that she met last January, breaking the hearts of her many male fans who have fapped themselves off to her luminous beauty and OMFG! figure many, many times.

You see, according to the study conducted by Dr. Marcel Waldinger of the Utrecht University in The Netherlands, the speed at which a man reaches his climax while having sex is genetically determined.

The study, which will be published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine this week, followed 89 men who suffer from primary premature ejaculation, which meant that they've had this problem ever since they became sexually active. And as the study's control group, they also kept track of 92 men who have no history of premature ejaculation whatsoever.

And so for a month, the female partners used a stopwatch at home to measure the time until the men ejaculated each time they had sex.

Apparently, based on the month-long study, the researchers found out that the men who climaxed too soon had a version of a gene that controls serotonin. And since serotonin levels control the rapidity of ejaculation and one's sexual appetite, among other things, it meant that, in the men who suffered from premature ejaculation, their serotonin appeared to be less active between the nerves in the section of the brain that controls ejaculation, prompting Dr. Weldinger to say that the low activity of the hormones meant that the nerve signals are not transferred the normal way in these men, contradicting the long-standing idea that the primary form of premature ejaculation is a psychological disorder.

If so, if premature ejaculation is indeed determined by your genes, then one day, it might be possible to treat the condition with gene therapy.

But according to Paula Hall, sexual psychotherapist for Relate, though premature ejaculation is definitely not purely psychological, there can be a psychological element that can be determined by how much control they have on their own. As an example, if the problem only occurs with their partner, then it is more likely to be psychological.

She also did say, though, that men who suffer from primary premature ejaculation tended to be fast reactors generally, and thus have very quick reflexes.

The All-New Mazda 3!!!

Five years after it landed on our shores, the current Mazda3 still looks good. Sure, it may look lumpy now beside the sleek, futuristic profile of the eight-gen Honda Civic, the conservative yet smart, wedge-like shape of the AE140 Corolla or the sporty, shark-like snout of the eighth-gen Mitsubishi Lancer, but it can still hold its own design-wise.

Still, with five years being the average lifespan for a car, it was inevitable that, sometime soon, Mazda would be unveiling the second-generation model.

So it's no surprise then that at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show on November 19, Mazda will officially unveil the all-new Mazda3.

Although the car being unveiled is targeted for the North American market, it's expected that what they'll be getting stateside would practically be the same as what we'll get here; that is, if Mazda Philippines has plans to bring the new-model Mazda3 to our shores soon. After all, it took a couple of years before we even got the Mazda MX-5 NC model locally, not to mention the fact that we never even got the second-gen NB model.

Also, I doubt that the 2.5 liter engine option the new-model Mazda3 will shares with the mid-size Mazda6 in the US will make it here. With gasoline prices hovering at just over PHP 50, it doesn't make sense to pack a higher-capacity engine into a smaller body and risk cannibalizing the already meager mid-size car market share of the Mazda6.

Still, judging by the looks alone, the new Mazda3 is a real stunner as it follows the company's current design trend. Looking like a downsized Mazda6 from the front, the slanted, upward sweep of the headlights coupled with the wide grin of the air intake and the large front brake cooling ducts suggests a sporty attitude to the car, which the rear lip spoiler and dual exhaust tips only reinforce further. Think of it as looking really fast while standing really still. Really zoom-zoom-like

One problem I have with the exterior design, though, is that from the side, particularly from the A-pillar going backwards, it still looks like the previous-gen Mazda3.

Too bad we don't get to see what the interior looks like, as well, although it's undoubtedly going to be done in Mazda's signature sports-oriented look executed with top-notch craftsmanship.

How I discovered Megan Fox...
