Aston Martin begins production of DB11 grand tourer

Roughly two months after Aston Martin ceased the production of its DB9 grand tourer, the British carmaker has announced that it has begun to produce its successor, the highly-anticipated DB11, with the first units being delivered to customers by October 2016.

"It's an exciting moment for the entire company when the first car of a new model goes into production," said Aston Martin President and Chief Executive Andy Palmer, who will personally inspect the first 1,000 cars to assure the quality of the vehicle. "The DB11 is a special car and it heralds the start of a new and exciting era for Aston Martin."

The Aston Martin DB11 was first revealed at the Geneva Motor Show last March. To date, over 3,000 orders have reportedly been placed for the DB11 which will all be hand-built at the company's sports car production plant and headquarters, in Gaydon, Warwickshire.

Press Release: Honda sales up by 19% versus year-ago performance

Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI), Honda's automobile business unit in the Philippines, proudly announces its sales performance for the month of August 2016. HCPI's Year-To-Date (YTD) sales grew by 19% from January to August with a total of 14,496 vehicle sales, compared to the same period in 2015 with 12,167 vehicles sold. The reported sales increase is attributed to the brand's main contributors, particularly the New City and the New Mobilio.

The New Honda City remains as the best-selling model among HCPI's 14 vehicle line-up with a remarkable 41% share in HCPI's year-to-date sales. It also advances its segment for leading the 1.5-liter sedan category. HCPI strives to increase its City sales by introducing a new Limited Edition Variant for its only locally produced vehicle. The New City 1.5 E Limited Edition Variant is equipped with exclusive Daytime Running Lights (DRL), Door Visors, speed-sensing Auto Door Lock, key fob with Panic Button, and a Limited Edition emblem.

Press Release: The Honda Jazz dazzles in Lunar Silver Metallic

Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI), Honda's automobile business unit in the Philippines, releases the Honda Jazz in Lunar Silver Metallic, a color emanating a tastefully upscale appeal that befits the pioneer in the subcompact hatchback segment. The Lunar Silver Metallic color option will be offered on all Jazz variants--the 1.5 V MT, the 1.5 V CVT, the 1.5 VX CVT, and the 1.5 VX+ CVT.

Versatility and performance complement the style of the Jazz Lunar Silver Metallic. Like all other variants of the Jazz, the Jazz Lunar Silver Metallic carries the patented ULTR Seat that lends a flexible and generously spaced interior. The ULTR seat can be adjusted to four modes depending on passenger and cargo hauling needs--Utility, Long, Tall, and Refresh (ULTR) Modes:
  • Utility Mode -- with the ULTR seat folded flat, the Jazz can carry two passengers as well as large items;
  • Long Mode -- with the ULTR seat folded flat and the front passenger seat reclined all the way back, the Jazz can carry two passengers and a long item with a maximum length of 226cm;
  • Tall Mode -- with the ULTR seat folded up, the Jazz can carry up to three passengers as well as tall items with a maximum height of 100cm in the second row; and
  • Refresh Mode -- with the front seats reclined all the way back to connect with the rear seats, the Jazz allows both the driver and the passenger to lounge and relax inside the car

Performance remains uncompromised since the Jazz is powered by a refined 1.5 liter i-VTEC engine that delivers a maximum power output of 120ps at 6,600 rpm. The engine is mated to either a five-speed Manual Transmission or a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) developed under Honda Earth Dreams Technology for a powerful yet fuel-efficient driving performance.

Besides having innovative and high-performance features, the Jazz trumps the competition in the field of fuel-efficiency. In the Department of Energy (DOE) Euro 4 Fuel Economy Run held earlier this year, the Honda Jazz 1.5 VX CVT gathered a 28.6 km/L efficiency rating, the highest among other Honda entries and the best in class among subcompact hatchbacks. This is attributed to the Jazz's ECO Assist System which consists of the ECON Mode that controls the engine, drive-by-wire, transmission, and air-conditioning to optimize fuel consumption, and the Eco Coach Ambient Light that changes color to indicate throttle input and promote fuel-efficient driving.

The Jazz 1.5 VX CVT and 1.5 VX+ CVT variants are also integrated with advanced features such as a seven-inch Touch Screen Display Audio, Hands-free Telephone (HFT) and Audio Streaming via Bluetooth Connectivity, as well as Touch Panel Auto Aircon that all add a premium appeal to the dashboard. Auxiliary, USB, and HDMI ports are available for passengers to connect and mirror their smart phones on the display audio with ease. Both Jazz variants are equipped with a Smart Key with Push Start System for added convenience to the driver.

Like other Honda vehicles, the Jazz is packed with safety technology for the peace of mind of its occupants. All Jazz variants come standard with Driver and Front Passenger SRS Airbags and Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). Additional features like Hill Start Assist (HSA), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), and Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) are offered in the 1.5 VX CVT and 1.5 VX+ CVT variants, plus Side Airbags and Side Curtain Airbags for the 1.5 VX+ CVT.

HCPI is now accepting reservations for the Jazz Lunar Silver Metallic with the following suggested retail prices:
  • 1.5 VX+ CVT -- P968,000
  • 1.5 VX CVT -- P928,000
  • 1.5 V CVT -- P828,000
  • 1.5 V MT -- P788,000

Other colors include:

  • Attract Yellow Pearl (1.5 VX+ CVT and 1.5 VX CVT only)
  • Vivid Sky Blue Pearl (1.5 VX+ CVT and 1.5 VX CVT only)
  • Modern Steel Metallic (1.5 VX+ CVT and 1.5 VX CVT only)
  • Taffeta White
  • Rallye Red

Miami Heat still unsure of Chris Bosh's future with the team

The intertwined fate of the Miami Heat and Chris Bosh remain unclear as they head into the 2016-2017 NBA season. Following the physical examination of the five-time All-Star power forward/center prior to the start of team's pre-season training camp, the Heat announced that it is unable to give Bosh the go-signal "to return to basketball activities" and that it has no timetable for his return.

This is definitely bad news for Bosh whose struggle with blood clots since the 2015 All-Star Game has sidelined him from the game for most of the past two seasons. If the blood clotting continues to prevent Bosh from rejoining the Heat, he may very well retire for good before the start of the season.

Unfortunately, asthma got the best of me on the week of the 2016 Philippine International Motor Show, hence the lack of coverage of the biennial event.

If I may suggest though, why not take a look at the galleries of the 2016 Manila International Auto Show girls and cars?

Jenson Button extends contract with McLaren-Honda but will be designated as third driver from 2017 Formula 1 season onward

Jenson Button has finally quashed the rumors that the 2016 Formula 1 season will be his last following McLaren-Honda's announcement that he will continue on with the team as part of an "innovative three-driver strategy" for the 2017 and 2018 Formula 1 seasons.

"Having extended his contract to include 2017 and 2018, he’ll continue to be a senior, influential and committed member of the team, and will remain centrally involved in the development of our cars," McLaren Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ron Dennis said of Button . "He'll also be available to race for us if circumstances require it. On behalf of all at McLaren-Honda, I want to say how thrilled we are that Jenson has extended his contractual relationship with us. Moreover, I’m absolutely certain that the depth of his experience and the currency of his expertise will give us an advantage over our opposition next season."

As one of the most senior drivers on the grid, coupled with McLaren-Honda's subpar performance this season, many have speculated that Button will be retiring from the sport at the end of the season. However, although Button has chosen to extend his contract for two more years and will continue to play "an active role as a key member of the team," the driver's line-up for the 2017 season will be bannered by two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso and the team's current reserve driver, Stoffel Vandoorne.

In effect, Button and Vandoorne will be swapping roles from the 2017 onward, with Button relegated to being McLaren-Honda's reserve driver and taking on  the mantle of developing its race cars while Vandoorne will be helping Alonso recapture the team's former glory.

"I'm delighted that I’ll be staying on as a key member of the McLaren-Honda team," Button said in a statement. "In fact I'm massively excited about my new role, which has come about as a result of a number of in-depth chats with Ron. Specifically, I'm looking forward to becoming even more deeply involved in the team's efforts to bring about the success we've all been striving to deliver. To be clear, I'm very definitely not retiring. I'm contracted for both 2017 and 2018, I intend to work hard on car-development, and I'm sure I’ll get behind the wheel of the new car at some point."

Vandoorne won't be wet behind the ears when he takes to the track next season following his Formula 1 at the 2016 Bahrain Grand Prix when he replaced Alonso after the latter was declared unfit to race following his high-speed crash at the 2016 Australian Grand Prix.

"It's an enormous honor to become a McLaren-Honda race driver, and I promise to work as hard as any Formula 1 driver ever has before. I already know the team extremely well...and I've already raced the car once and tested it often. I have total confidence in the potential of the McLaren-Honda project, and I firmly believe that, racing alongside a brilliant and experienced driver, I'll be able to make a strong contribution to the team's future World Championship successes."
