Goodbye, Fuji Heavy Industries. Hello, Subaru.

Fuji Heavy Industries, the conglomerate behind the Subaru brand of vehicles, will effectively change its company name to Subaru Corporation from April 1, 2017, in time to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Nakajima Aircraft Company, from which Fuji Heavy Industries traces its origins.

Fuji Heavy Industries was established under its current name in 1953. In 1958, it entered the car manufacturing industry with the introduction of the Subaru 360 minicar. Today, the Subaru brand of vehicles can be found in more than 90 countries worldwide, with global vehicle sales expected to exceed one million units for the fiscal year ending in March 2017--a first for the brand.

According to Fuji Heavy Industries, the decision to shift from the long-familiar company name to the brand name is to further accelerate its efforts to enhance the Subaru brand "and achieve even greater growth for Subaru as a distinctive global brand in the automotive and aerospace industries."
