The Mazda MX-5 is Japan's 2015-2016 Car of the Year

The Mazda MX-5 has been named as the 2015-2016 Car of the Year Japan, succeeding the Mazda 2  which earned the honor for the 2014-2015 calendar.

The MX-5 is the sixth model in Mazda's current lineup to be equipped with the full range of the Japanese carmaker's SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and KODO-Soul of Motion design. And just like its stablemates, the lightweight, two-seater, front-engine rear-wheel drive roadster is designed for pure driving fun. Weighing nearly the same as the first-generation MX-5, the all-new model is a true driver's car and yet is practical enough to be used as a daily driver with its weatherproof, easy-open-and-close soft top, and enough space in the trunk to fit two carry-on bags.

To be eligible for the 2015-2016 Car of the Year Japan award, a car must have an expected annual sales volume of over 500 units and should have been announced or launched in Japan between October 1, 2014 and October 31, 2015. The MX-5 is also the sixth Mazda vehicle to bag the Car of the Year Japan award.

"This result is thanks to everyone's enthusiastic support, and we are both grateful and proud that our Roadster has received such a prestigious award," Mazda President and CEO Masamichi Kogai said in a statement. "Inspired by this win, we will continue building cars that offer driving pleasure, aiming to become a 'one-and-only' for our customers that they will choose again and again."
