Instagram has a new video app, and it's called "Boomerang"

Instagram has just launched a new video app called Boomerang "that lets you turn everyday moments into something fun and unexpected"

That's right. A year after it launched Hyperlapse, which is basically an app that creates time-lapse videos using your mobile device's camera, Instagram has come up with what is essentially a GIF creator that - again - uses your mobile device's camera to capture images. Because that's what it really does despite Instagram's claim that it is "not a 'gif.'"
According to Instagram, using the Boomerang app simply requires you to frame the shot you're planning and, once your subject's ready, to press the button. The app then takes care of everything by shooting a burst of photos and then stitching everything "into a high-quality mini video that plays forward and backward," which is what a GIF does, right? As expected of course, the resulting mini-video is saved in your smartphone and can be shared on Instagram.

Unlike Hyperlapse though which is still only available for Apple's iOS devices, Boomerang is already available for iOS in Apple’s App Store and for Android in Google Play.
